Women with ovarian cancer have their say at first National Forum
Ovarian Cancer Awareness Week: 27 February – 5 March
Former Olympic athletes Nicole Livingstone and Raelene Boyle will join women with ovarian cancer, their family and friends to have their say on the future of ovarian cancer care in Australia at the first National Ovarian Cancer Consumer Forum in Melbourne today.
The National Breast Cancer Centre’s Ovarian Cancer Program and the National Ovarian Cancer Network (OvCa Australia) will host the Forum with women making the journey from as far as Adelaide, Sydney, Brisbane and Toowoomba to attend.
Each year approximately 1200 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer in Australia and more than half of these women will not survive five years after their diagnosis.
“The Forum provides an opportunity for women with ovarian cancer to hear about best practice treatment and care and also to give feedback about their experiences to help shape future directions in care,” said Director of the National Breast Cancer Centre Dr Helen Zorbas.
Topics on the agenda for discussion include personal perspectives about a diagnosis of ovarian cancer, information about ovarian cancer treatments and challenges for the future.
OvCa Australia Director and former Olympic Swimmer Nicole Livingstone, who lost her mother to ovarian cancer, will present at the Forum. Olympic athlete and ovarian cancer survivor Raelene Boyle will join those touched by the disease in speaking about her experience.
